책가도(圖)는 거리그림에 나오는 다양한 소재에서 조선시대 문인들의 독서생활이나 고기물(古器物)에 대한 완상(玩賞) 취미를 엿볼 수 있다. 따라서 이것은 선비나 부유층의 서재, 아이들 방 등을 장식하는 그림으로 사용하여 표현하였다.
As the paintings illustrating characteristics of a variety of subjects based on Korean sentiments, Minhwa (Korean folk paintings) are unconventional paintings that had been loved not only by the royalty but also by the nobleman and the commoner. Particularly, beautifying their living environment, Minhwa was the paintings of blessing, like words of blessing, embodied a reflection of the people's long-cherished desires to live long, healthy and prosperous lives, to have many precious sons, to be married couples in peace and harmony, to pass the state examination and to leave many offsprings, which is different from other oriental paintings and western paintings as they are mainly produced for appreciation.
In the painting of King and Queen, the king is symbolized with Irworobongdo (Painting of the Sun, the Moon and Five Peaks) and a crown, the courtiers with waterfalls on both sides, the people with water, the voice of the people with wave and a wish of eternity of the country with a pair of pine trees, which is interpreted as 'mutual communication and reconciliation' required in managing the country, as from the top, the king and queen give their orders to the people through the courtiers and from the bottom, the voice of the people is delivered to the king and queen. The queen is symbolized with Gungjungmorando (Painting of Peony In Royal Court) and a queen's crown. Gungjungmorando made in a form of an eight-fold or ten-fold folding screen was to beautify ritual events or royal wedding ceremonies and peony in the painting was considered as the most beautiful flower symbolizing prosperity, healthiness, splendor, and comfort and easy. In the middle of the panting, the queen's crown was decorated with golden powders in the same way that the king's crown was embellished.
We see reading life of the scholars in the Joseon Dynasty period and their appreciation and preference of antique items in Chaekgado (Painting of Books and Stationary). Therefore, it was a decorative painting to beautify reading rooms of the scholars or children's rooms in wealthy families.
